Alan, they do look that way, and I was a little concerned at first. But my running shoes have an essentially flat sole, too, as do my trail runners, and the Targhees themselves. They all have little indentations on the edges of the sole that give the impression of a separate heel, but when you actually look at the sole, it's pretty close to being a simple inclined plane. I think I'll give these a try, and I'll let you know what I find.
If these don't work out, perhaps patent leather pumps with a nice little silk bow?
They look to have a bit of a flat sole unit – no step at the front of the heel – possibly a bit slippy?
